Hajj Ritual

Second: The Talbiyyah

The talbiyyah is the utterance of the following words: "Labbayk Allāhumma Labbayk. Labbayka Lā Sharīka Laka Labbayk ". It is also highly recommended that one add the following words: "Inna l-Hamda, wa-n-Ni´mata, Laka wa-l-Mulk, Lā Sharīka Lak.".

#179: Every pilgrim must learn the correct pronunciation of the talbiyyah and recite it properly, exactly as would be the case with the recitation of the takbīratu-l-ihrām in prayer, even if this is achieved by repeating another person's recitation. If someone is not able to pronounce the words correctly and there is no one to guide them, they are obligated to recite the words as best they can, unless that would be so unintelligible as to be unrecognizable as talbiyyah. Under such circumstances, it is preferable for them to recite as much as they can; or they can recite the translation of the talbiyyah and appoint a representative to recite the talbiyyah on their behalf.

#180: If a person has become mute due to disease or accident, they should recite the talbiyyah as well as they can, and, if they are unable to do so, they should move their lips and their tongue with the intention of reciting the talbiyyah and move their fingers consistent with the spoken words.

Someone who is born mute should move their lips and their tongue and also gesticulate with their fingers.

#181: Another person must act in place of a child who is not mumeyyiz and recite the talbiyyah on their behalf.

#182: The talbiyyah is a prerequisite for the state of consecration of the Hağğu-t-Tamattu´, the ´Umratu-t-

Tamattu´, as well as for the Hağğu-l-Ifrād and the ´Umrat-ul-Mufradah. As regards the Hağğu-l-Qirān, the state of ihrām may be assumed by means of the talbiyyah or by the following actions: The placing of a special identifying mark on the sacrificial animal. In case of a camel (ish´ār): Scoring with a knife on the right side of the hump, which causes a minor bleeding that marks this animal as a sacrificial animal, or by means of a tag (taqlīd): by tying something around the sacrificial animal's neck, which is done with camels as well as with other sacrificial animals. However, reciting the talbiyyah is preferable to marking, and even if the state of ihrām is initiated by placing the identifying mark, the talbiyyah should be recited.

#183: Ritual purity is not a prerequisite for the validity of the ihrām. Therefore it is possible to assume the state of ihrām despite being ğunub, hā'id or nufasā or without having performed wudū.

#184: The role of the talbiyyah for ihrām, or that of the ish´ār and the taqlīd in case of the Hağğu-l-Qirān, corresponds to that of the takbīratu-l-ihrām in prayer. The state of consecration is not complete without it. Hence, if someone wears the ihrām clothing and does something, which is not permitted during the state of ihrām, before having recited the talbiyyah (or before having performed ish´ār or taqlīd, see above), they do not have to make amends, since they have not yet been muhrim, that is, they were not yet in the state of ihrām.

#185: It is recommended that one delay reciting the talbiyyah out loud until reaching "the empty desert" (that is the boundary of Dhul-Hulaifah, where the terrain becomes flat). On arriving there, the talbiyyah should be recited aloud and clearly without delay. This applies only to men; women are not obligated to recite the talbiyyah aloud. In case of all the mawāqīt, when entering the state of ihrām, the talbiyyah is not spoken aloud until one begins to walk. If the state of consecration is assumed in the Holy Mosque, the talbiyyah may be delayed until reaching Ar-Raqta. This is a place near the mosque Ar-Rayah.

#186: It is an obligation to recite the talbiyyah at least once, and it is recommended that it be repeated as often as possible. For someone who is performing the ´Umratu-t-Tamattu´ it is al-ahwaṯ to end the recitation of the talbiyyah on viewing the houses of the historic city of Mecca. That is, those coming from Medina finish it at a place called ´Aqbatu-l-Madiniyyīn (which is a narrow mountain path) and those coming from south at ´Aqabatu Dhī Tuwā. Those who perform the ´Umrat-ul-Mufradah have to terminate the recitation of the talbiyyah on reaching the Haram Area if they arrive from outside Mecca. Those who are outside Mecca but within the Haram Area should end the recitation on reaching Mecca. Those who perform the Hajj have to terminate it at noon on the day of Arafat.

#187: If one has already put on the ihrām clothing but not yet left the mīqāt (the place at which delaying the recitation of the talbiyyah is not permitted) and is unsure of whether or not they have recited the talbiyyah, then they should recite it. If, after the recitation of the talbiyyah, any doubt should arise as to whether it was pronounced correctly, it should be assumed that it was recited properly.
