Hajj Ritual

Appropriate conduct for the Ṯawāf

It has been reported by Muawiyah bin Ammar, quoting Abi Abdillah (as), that during the ṯawāf, the following supplication may be said:

(O Allah! I beseech You by Your name, which permits walking on the surface of water as if walking on solid ground. And I beseech You by Your name, by which Your throne trembles. And I beseech You by Your name, by which Your angels’ feet move. And I beseech You by Your name, by which Moses called on You from the side of the mountain, and then You responded to him and met him with affection coming from You. And I beseech You by Your name, by which You granted forgiveness to Muhammad, may Allah grant peace and honor on him and his family, for his past and future faults, and by which You perfected Your favor upon him, that You make me to...(ask for your wishes).)

When You reach the gate of the Holy Ka´aba, pray for blessings to be sent upon Muhammad and his Holy progeny (as) and between the Rukn-ul-Yamaani and the Black Stone say:

(Our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the hereafter and keep us safe from the torment of the fire.)

And say during the ṯawāf:

(O Allah! I am in need of You and I am full of fear, seeking refuge. So do not change my body and do not alter my name.)

Imam Sadiq (as) said that when Ali bin Hussein (as) came to the Hiğr (enclosure) of Ismail (as), before reaching the Mīzāb (the drainage pipe on the top of the Holy Ka´aba), he would raise his head and, while looking at the Mīzāb, he would say:

(O Allah! Place me in Heaven by Your mercy, save me by Your mercy from the fire, protect me from ailments, increase the lawful sustenance for me, and drive off from me the evilness of the vicious among ǧinn and mankind, and the evilness of the vicious among the Arabs and the non-Arabs.)

It has been authentically reported from Abi Abdillah (as) that, when reaching the back of the Holy Ka´aba, having passed the Hijr (enclosure), the pilgrim should say:

(O the One of Favor and Might and Generosity and Nobleness, my service is weak, so supplement it for me and accept it from me; truly You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.)

It has been reported from Abu-l-Hassan Ridha (as) that, on reaching the Rukn-ul-Yamaani, one should raise their hands in supplication and say:

(O Allah! O Patron of well-being and Creator of well-being and Provider of well-being and Granter of well-being and Giver of all well-being and the One Who bestows well-being upon me and upon all creation. O Beneficent in this world and in the hereafter and the Most Merciful in both of them, send blessings upon Muhammad and his progeny, grant us well-being and continuation of the well-being and completeness of the well-being and gratefulness for the well-being, in this world and in the hereafter, O Most Merciful of the merciful).

It has been reported from Abi Adillah (as) that, when the pilgrim is completing their ṯawāf and is reaching the ´Mustağār', which is located a little before the Rukn-ul-Yamaani, they should reach out for the Holy Ka´aba, cling to it and say:

(O Allah! The House is Your House and the Servant is Your Servant and this is the place for taking refuge with You from the fires of hell).

Then confess your sins, for none of the faithful confesses to their Lord in this place without Allah forgiving them, if Allah wills. Then say:

(O Allah! Comfort and relief and well-being come from You. O Allah! Indeed my actions are weak, so grant them strength and forgive me (the sins), which are so apparent to You but concealed from Your creatures.)

Then the pilgrim should seek refuge with Allah from hellfire and be engrossed in supplication. Then they should take hold of the Rukn-ul-Yamaani, as is stated in another report from Imam Jafer (as). Then they should kiss the Rukn-ul-Yamaani and the corner where the Black Stone is placed and say:

(O Allah! Grant me contentment with the sustenance You have provided for me and bless what You have given to me.)

It is recommended that one hold on to each corner of the Holy Ka´aba during each ṯawāf and, when touching the Black Stone, say:

(I have fulfilled my commitment and I have accomplished my obligation, so that You can witness me delivering it.)
