Hajj Ritual

20. Covering the Face (in Case of Females)

#266: A woman who is in the state of ihrām is not permitted to cover her face with a veil or the like. As a precautionary measure, she should not cover her face at all in any way. She may cover it during sleep, and there is no objection to covering part of the face during the prayer to make sure that the headdress is worn properly.

#267: In the state of ihrām, a woman is allowed to pull her head covering down to her nose if she wants to shield herself from a male stranger. Apparently she does not need to hold the cloth away from her face with her hand, although – as a precaution – it is better to do so.

#268: The penalty for covering the face consists of a sheep (ahwaṯ-ul-awlā).
