Liaison office of Grand Ayatullah Sayyid Ali Al Sistani (L.M.H.L) in London, Europe, North and South America.
Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s.) was one of the great pinnacles of the history of Islam. We cannot speak about him in such a short time. However, we need to alert those scholars, orators, academics, intellectuals and Islamic organizations and the media- who are responsible for teaching future Muslim generations – to explain the school of Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.) and in the forefront the school of Imam Jaffar ibn Muhammad (a.s.). Because if these generations are not familiar with this school then it’s as though they are not familiar with real Islam and do not understand it properly. This is because the Imams of Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.) are the true channels linking us directly to the source of Islam and the Qur’an – as Allah (s.w.t.) has said:
So ask the people of the message if you do not know. (Holy Qur’an 16:43)
..And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah. And those firm in knowledge.. (Holy Qur’an 3:7).
Also, as Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s.) said: “My words are the words of my father and my father’s words are the words of my grandfather and my grandfather’s words are the words of Hussain and Hussain’s words are the words of Hassan and Hassan’s words are the words of Amirul-Momineen and Amirul-Momineen’s words are the words of the Messenger of Allah and the words of the Messenger of Allah are the words of Allah Almighty.”
The Ahlul-Bayt(a.s.) are the true embodiment of the message because of their association with the revelation through the Prophet (s.a.w.w.).
ووال أُناساً نقلهم وحديثهـــم
روى جـدنا عن جبرائيل عن الباري
Therefore, any attempt to ignore these symbols in the minds Muslim generations is an attempt to obliterate Islam itself and transform these generations, which is what we see happening today through two terrifying and dangerous schemes:
The first scheme is: To obscure from these generations the true personalities and real leaders in the history of Islam and the message. This opacity and obscurantism is but an attempt to deform these generations and try to uproot them and separate them from the true sources of Islam.
The second scheme: To get these generations used to sanctifying extraneous, hypocritical and fake elements, as in Sayyid Al-Askari’s book who counted one hundred and fifty fabricated Sahabis with no real presence in history. The dangerous thing in this day and age is the media and the cultural and educational institutions in Muslim countries who are trying to raise generations of Muslims on the sanctification of those coming from here and there; men from east and west and singers and unimportant people in history. Whereas the true figures of Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.) are absent from the mentalities and awareness of this generation. You see the media, the press and school curricula and the audio visual outlets do not mention the Imams of Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.) and their followers. This is because they do not wish for these generations to have a strong personality and to grow up knowing about the struggle and sacrifices Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.) made for the sake of the message.
This is an approach and a terrifying plan to transform the youth of the Muslim Ummah and exclude them from the real path that was drawn out by the Prophet (s.a.w.w.) and the Imams (a.s.). The prophet (s.a.w.w.) said: “My Ahlul-Bayt are like Noah’s ark; whoever is on it survived and whoever remained behind perished.” And his (s.a.w.w’s) saying: “My Ahlul-Bayt are like stars; whenever one sets another rises.” And Imam Al-Baqir (a.s.) said to Selemeh ibn Haykel and Hakam ibn Otaiba: “You will not find valid knowledge in east or west unless it emanates from us Ahlul-Bayt.” He also said: “No one has a knowledge or a legal opinion unless it has been obtained from Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) and from us Ahlul-Bayt. And no fair judgement is passed unless it’s cause, key and knowledge emanated from Ali (a.s.) and from us.”
From this conference, we hold the scholars and preachers, teachers and writers, Islamic and cultural institutions and all their departments responsible for raising our children on the path of Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.) and indentifying the leading and genuine Muslim figures of Islamic history.
The convening of this conference is to familiarize the Ummah with one of the pinnacles of the Islamic message, Imam Jaffar ibn Mohammad Al-Sadiq (a.s.), who is part of Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.) whom ‘Allah intends only to remove from them the impurity [of sin], and to purify them an extensive purification.’ He (a.s.) being one of those noble chosen ones, a leader of Islam and the message and the Ummah who is included in Allah’s words: And We made them leaders guiding by Our command. And We inspired to them the doing of good deeds, establishment of prayer, and giving of zakah; and they were worshippers of Us. (Holy Qur’an 21:73) Also:
And We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and [when] they were certain of Our signs.(Holy Qur’an 32:24)
Discourse about this Imam (a.s.) has no end, because he (a.s.) was a sea without shores and an immeasurable summit. What else can we ask for from the life of the Imam (a.s.) that was full of immense contributions.
I feel compelled to present some scientific points from the life of this great Imam (as):
1- Many specialists are needed to study the life of Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s.) because there are several scientific aspects to his school that cannot be absorbed by a single scientist or intellectual.
2- The Imam (a.s.) had practical medical views on general health and medicine. Therefore a scholar of jurisprudence, a speaker or a historian cannot deal with this aspect in the same way the medical profession can.
3- The Imam (a.s.) had practical views in chemistry and the various branches of physics as well as in biology. This cannot be dealt with by a speaker who does not specialise in this field.
4- The Imam (a.s.) had practical views on astronomy. So who can explain these opinions and analyse them correctly other than an astronomer?
5- The Imam (a.s.) had practical views on the functions of body organs, which he (a.s.) explained in great detail – which only specialists can understand and talk about.
6- The Imam (a.s.) had theories on genetic science and psychology, general medicine, paediatrics, immunisation, education and ethics and many more. Therefore one must find the right specialists to explain these sciences and subjects.
In brief, we cannot fathom the Imam’s personality and the scope of his school unless it is through special committees that can explain to us the great legacy he left us in the various fields of knowledge.
7- Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s.) had a scholarly approach which must be made available to specialists to study - be it in practical experience or through a curriculum to discuss and address ideas and theories. The Imam (a.s.) educated his students on this approach to discuss their ideas and trends. This needs careful study by experts in order to explain it very clearly.
8-The Imam (a.s.) was the first to develop the specialization system and lay it’s sound foundations. Not as some may claim that the western scholars are the ones who proposed the specialization and experimentation method. Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s.) is the one who put forward the scholarly method in dealing with experimental issues and the scientific method in the discussion of theories and opinions.
9- The Imam (a.s.) did not just talk about these sciences but educated bright students in various the fields. For example: In Islamic law (Shari’a) and its fundamentals and Hadith; Zarareh and Abi Bassir and Abaan ibn Taghleb who narrated thirty thousand Hadiths. Also, Muhammad ibn Muslim who narrated sixteen thousand Hadiths from the Imam (a.s.) the same as Jameel Al-Darraj and other outstanding students from this school who narrated hundreds of Hadiths. Sayyid Al-Khoei (q.s.) in his encyclopaedia mentioned the number of Hadith narrators as being three thousand narrators. Someone also mentioned that: ‘In the Kufa Mosque I saw 900 shaykhs, all of whom were saying “Jaffar ibn Mohammad Al-Sadiq (a.s.) said to us..Because of this great number of scholars we see many Ahadeeth being narrated from Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s.) which is not the case with any of the other Massomeen (a.s.). Tens of volumes of the various sciences have been gathered by later scholars. During Imam Redha’s (a.s.) time the number of students of this school reached four thousand.
A- In philosophy and theology, Hisham ibn Al-Hakam and Momin Al-Taaq and Muhammad Al-Tayyar and others excelled.
B- In wisdom and the mysteries of the universe and human existence; Al-Mufadhal ibn Umar author of the book Tawheed Al-Mufadhal is well known.
C- In chemistry, physics and medicine, Jabir ibn Haiyaan complied nearly 500 treatise all dictated by Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s.) – which have been translated and used in the west as in their book called ‘Imam Al-Sadiq as known by western scholars.’ Unfortunately Jabir’s contribution and Imam Al-Sadiq’s (a.s.) other students is rarely mentioned in Muslim schools and their media.
These are just a few features of Imam Al-Sadiq’s specialization university. So where are the Muslims these days from this school? Where are their newspapers, books, school curricula and media to show the world these sciences and divine knowledge to lighten their path according to an authentic Islamic approach?
10-We need to inform these generations that the scholars of the Muslim faiths were all Imam Jaffar ibn Mohammad Al-Sadiq’s (a.s.) students, either directly or otherwise. Imam Abi Hanifa and Imam Al-Malik and Muhammad ibn Al-Hassan Al-Shaybani and Sufyan Al-Thowri, all of whom are focal points in Islamic history and all were Imam Al-Sadiq’s (a.s.) students. Imam Al-Shafi’i was taught by Malik and Shaybani and Sufyan who were all Imam Al-Sadiq’s (a.s.) students.
As for Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal, he was taught by Al-Shafi’i who was taught by students of Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s.).
In conclusion Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s.) is the master of all the Islamic faiths and scholars such that ibn abi Al-Hadeed Al-Mo’tazili said: “The knowledge of the four faiths belongs to Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s.).” The famous historian, Abu Na’im Al-Isfahani said: “Many of Jaffar’s followers narrated from him. Among them; Yahya ibn Sa’eed Al-Ansari, Ayoub Al-Sakhtiyani, Abaan ibn Taghleb, Abu Umar ibn Al-Ola and Yazid ibn Abdullah Al-Haad. The following prominent Imams also narrated from Imam Jaffar ibn Muhammad Al-sadiq (a.s.); Malik ibn Anas, Shou’ba ibn Al-Hajjaj, Sufyan Al-Thowri, Ibn Jareeh, Obaid-illah ibn Amro and Rooh ibn Qasim and Sufyan ibn Ayieneh.. and the list goes on.
When we know these facts, then it would be fair to say that authentic Islamic knowledge goes back to Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s.) and his school only.
So where are those concerned with the affairs of the Muslim Ummah from showing these facts to the youth so they may know their true leaders and masters whom we were commanded to follow – as the messenger of Allah (s.a.w.w) has said: “I leave for you two weighty things; the book of Allah and my progeny from my Ahlul-Bayt [household]. If you stick to them you will not be deceived.”
Convening of this conference and conveying of some of this school’s features by the participants is only to enlighten Muslims and their youth with the endless contributions of the Imams of Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.) beginning with the Commander of the faithful, Imam Amirul-Momineen (a.s.) and ending with Imam Al-Askari (a.s.).
So I say it frankly , if we disregard the history of Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.) and their lives and sacrifices for the sake of the message we will have ignored true Islam altogether.
