Liaison office of Grand Ayatullah Sayyid Ali Al Sistani (L.M.H.L) in London, Europe, North and South America.
The representative of the leading Marja’iyah in Europe, Allamah Sayyid Murtaza Kashmiri congratulates the Muslim world on the month of allegiance [Wilaya].
Responding to questions by Shamsul-Islam website on the importance of Ghadir Day he said:
‘Muslims should identify the month of Thil-Hijja as the month of allegiance [Wilaya] because of its many occasions connected to Amirul-Momineen, Ali ibn-Abi Talib and the Ahlul-Bayt (peace be upon them all).
Unfortunately, Muslims have ignored and neglected celebrating and commemorating these great events that hold great rewards as confirmed in the Holy Quran:
((Say: "No reward do I ask of you for this except the love of those near of kin." )) Holy Quran 42:23
The Messenger of Allah recommended following his progeny’s instructions and adhering to them - after the Qur’an that is- when he said: ‘I recommend for you the book of Allah [holy Quran] and my progeny, the Ahlul-Bayt, if you cling to them you will never - after me - go astray.’
But when Muslims distanced themselves from the Messenger of Allah’s recommendations, they suffered the consequences of calamaties. You see them today in rivalry and conflict with each other as described by the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.w.): ‘Nations are about to devour you like food.’ He was asked: ‘O Messenger of Allah is it because of our small numbers?’ He said: No you will be many, but it’s due to your love for this world and your dislike for the Hereafter.’
The 18th day of Thil-Hijja is the most important of these events when this Qur’anic verse was revealed: ((..Today I have perfected your religion for you and completed my favour upon you and chosen for you Islam – as a religion...)) Holy Qur’an 5:3
We therefore congratulate all Muslims on the advent of Eid al-Ghadir, named in the heavens as the ‘day of the promised covenant’ and on earth as the ‘adopted charter’ and the ‘memorable gathering.’ It is Allah’s greatest Eid, the Eid of Muhammad’s household (a.s.), the day of proclamation when religion was perfected and favour completed. Abu al-Fath al-Sharestani said in his book (al-Millal wal-Nahl 1/163) “the same thing occurred when Islam was perfected and its course regulated when the Almighty sent His word:
((O Messenger, deliver whatever has been sent down to you by your Lord. If you do not do so, you will not have conveyed His message..)) Holy Quran 5:67
When the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) arrived at Ghadir-Khum he ordered the shelters (from the sun) to be raised. Prayers were called, then while still on his mount, he (peace be upon him and his family) said: “Whomsoever I was his master then Ali is his master. O Lord, support he who supports him and be against whoever is against him, help whoever helps him and disappoint whoever disappoints him and let justice turn with him wherever he turns - declared three times.”
Jalal-uddin al-Sayooti said in his interpretation (al-Durr al-Manthoor 2/298) based on proof from Abi Sai’id al-Khudri: This verse “O Messenger, deliver whatever has been sent down to you by your Lord...” (Qur’an 5:67) was revealed unto the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) on Ghadir Khum day; it relates to Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.s). He also said in (2/259): “When the messenger of Allah appointed Ali as his vicegerent on the day of Ghadir Khum, the angel Jibrael descended with the following verse”:
((..Today I have perfected your religion for you and completed my favour upon you and chosen for you Islam – as a religion..)) Holy Qur’an 5:3
Al-Khateeb al-Baghdadi said in (History of Baghdad 8/284), al-Hafidh al-Hasskani in (Shwahid-ul-Tanzeel 1/200) and Ibn Assakir in (History of Damascus 42/284) plus others with several reliable proofs from Abu Hurraira who said: “Whoever fasts on the 18th of Thil-Hijja Allah will count it as having fasted sixty months – the day of Ghadir Khum. When the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) raised the hand of Ali Ibn Abi Talib and said: “Am I not the master of Momineen?” They said: “Yes, O messenger of Allah.” He said: “Whomsoever I am his master then Ali is his master.” Then Omar ibn-al-Khatab said: “Truly so Oh son of Abi Talib, you have become my master and master of every Muslim.”
Thus Allah sent the verse: ((Today I have perfected your religion for you...)) Other sources of reference have narrated the same, about thirty in all - as gathered by Shaykh al-Amini in his book (al-Ghadir fi al-Kitab wal-Sunnah wal-Adab). This book is truly considered as the encyclopaedia of the Wilaya and has been praised by those for and against alike. It has provided arguments, texts and proofs from narrations by Islamic scholars from different beliefs - leaving no room for excuse.
We therefore congratulate Momineen on this day when the holy messenger launched a plan for the continuation of the Islamic message, having completed its establishment stage, like all the prophets and messengers before him; none of whom passed without pledging their divine mission- till the guardian [Wassi] Murtadha to continue the task after him and to be sure the Shari’ah will be in safe hands to protect it from evil and defend it from a belligerent infidel or a hypocrite thug and guard it against an external enemy threatening its existence and an internal one attempting to distort its concepts and contents.
This is a day that guarantees the survival of Islam, a day of guiding the Ummah to safe shores, the compass for Islam’s way ahead, the standard of justice. It’s the day of guidance towards the Imamah and Khilafah, the master of unity Amirul-Momineen Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.s.). Therefore, it is truly Allah’s greatest Eid. Friday, al-Adha, al-Fitr are also Eid days pertaining to the branches of religion (Foroo’ al-Din) such as prayers, Haj and fasting. This day is about the roots, the foundation of religion, its essence and continuation.
Thus it is narrated from al-Sadiq, Jaffar ibn Moussa (a.s.), when he was asked if there was another Eid for Muslims, other than Friday, al-Adha and al-Fitr ? He (a.s.) said: “Yes, greatest in sanctity.” The narrator said: “which is it then?” He (a.s.) said: “The day when the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) appointed Amirul-Momineen (a.s.) and said: Whomsoever I am the master of then Ali is his master, it is the day of 18th Dhil-hijjah.” The narrator said: “What should we do then on such a day?” He (a.s.) said: “Fasting, worshiping, remembering (dhikr) Ale-Muhammad (a.s.) and doing Salawat.” The messenger of Allah instructed Amirul-Momineen (a.s.) to observe Eid on this day. It is narrated from al-Ridha, Ali ibn Moussa (a.s.) on the virtue of spending to relive this day: “One dirham is worth a thousand for your brothers who know. Give to your brothers on this day and bring happiness to every Momin and Mominah.”
As for other events in this blessed month:
The first was the 9th of Thil-Hijja when the Suratul-Tawba (A declaration of immunity from Allah and His Messenger was announced by Amirul-Momineen Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) from the Messenger of Allah) when the angel Jibrael descended saying: O Messenger of Allah it will be performed by yourself only or a man close to you. The closest man to him was Ali ibn Abi-Talib Amirul-Momineen (a.s.) and he began to propagate it on that memorable day.
The second event was the day of Mubahala (invocation) when the word of certainty triumphed against devious Christianity. It was the 24th day of Thil-Hijja, the day when this verse of Allah was revealed: ((If any one disputes in this matter with thee, now after (full) knowledge Hath come to thee, say: "Come! let us gather together,- our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves: Then let us earnestly pray, and invoke the curse of Allah on those who lie!")) Holy Quran 3: 61.
On the same day the verse of purification was revealed: ((..And Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O people of the House and to purify you a (thorough) purification)) Holy Qur’an 33:33
The prophet (peace be upon him and his family) cloaked himself with his Abaya and included with him Ali, Fatima, Hassan & Hussain (a.s.) and said: O Allah every prophet held his household dearest to him, O Allah these are my household so keep uncleanness away from them and purify them a thorough purification; Jibreal then descended and revealed the verse of purification in their regard; then the prophet took them out for invocation (Mobahala). When the Christians saw the truth in their faces they did not dare to challenge them to invocation; instead they called a truce.
On a similar day whilst in a state of Ruku, Amirul-Momineen (a.s.) gave away his ring as Sadaqa to a poor person after which this verse was revealed: ((Only Allah is your real friend [vali] and His apostle and the believers, those who keep up prayers and pay the regular charity while they bow humbly [Ruku] * And whoever takes Allah and His apostle and those who believe for a guardian, then surely the party of Allah must certainly triumph)) Holy Qur’an 5: 55&56
On the 25th day of Thil-Hijja, Surah 76 ( called Time or Man) in regards to Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.) was revealed : ((Has there not been over Man a long period of Time, when he was nothing - (not even) mentioned?)) Because they, the Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.), had fasted for three days and they gave their break-fast food to a poor, an orphan and a captive – and broke their fast with water.
Muslims should therefore celebrate this day (of Ghadir) and do as they did by fasting, giving Sadaqa and food, to the poor, needy and orphans.
We ask Allah Almighty to grant us all success to revive these occasions so the following Dua of Imam Al-Sadiq (a.s.) may include us, he said: ‘May Allah have mercy upon those who revive our events.’
May Allah grant us all success to implement His commands and those of the trustee of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) by our allegiance to them (Wilaya) and to obtain their intercession in the Hereafter for Allah is the all powerful master.
