Liaison office of Grand Ayatullah Sayyid Ali Al Sistani (L.M.H.L) in London, Europe, North and South America.
The Muslim world was shocked on the martyrdom of the talking Qur’an on one of the nights of power (lailat-ul Qadr) namely; Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (a.s.) who personified the Qur’an’s teachings in word and action. It was he who said to the people of Sham in Siffeen when they wanted to make the Qur’an a rule:
“This is the silent book of Allah and I am the one who explains it. Take the talking Qur’an and leave the rule of the silent Qur’an if there is no one else to explain it.”He (a.s.) was the one who said: By Allah there is no Aya (verse) unless I know why, where and upon whom it was revealed.”
He (a.s.) also said: “Ask me about the book of Allah, for there is no Aya (verse) unless I know if it was revealed at night or during the day or on a plain or on a mountain.”
As narrated by ibn Abi Massoud: “The Qur’an descended on seven letters and there is no letter that does not have a back or an interior and Ali (a.s.) has the knowledge of the outer and the inner of the Qur’an.” Plus other narrations in this regard. Thus, it is from Imam Ali and his Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.) that the interpretation and exegesis are taken, for they are the directory of the Qur’an. No one can fathom Allah’s book except them [the Ahlul-Bayt a.s.] , for they are the gates of knowledge and its keepers and who were made comparable to the Qur’an by the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.w.). Many verses of this silent book also descended in relation to the talking Qur’an. Ibn Abbas narrates: “ What was revealed in Allah’s book regarding Ali (a.s.) was not revealed regarding anyone else.” Then he said:”More than three hundred Ayas in praise of Ali (a.s.) descended. All of the Messenger’s companions knew this fact and referred to Amirul-Mominnen Ali (a.s.) when they could not understand an interpretation or exegesis of Allah’s book and one can find numerable references in this regards made by historians.
The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.w.) exposed the depth of the link between the talking Qur’an and the silent Qur’an when he said: “Ali is with the Qur’an and the Qur’an is with Ali, they will not be separated until they gather on the Hawth.” This does not pertain to a gathering in a place or at a particular time. It means a gathering of the soul, the reality and the knowledge. Ali (a.s.) is the Qur’an, its teacher, its interpreter, its keeper and the one who fought for it. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.w.) said: “I fight for the revelation of the Qur’an and Ali fights for its interpretation.” Ali (a.s.) was martyred for the sake of achieving the aims of the Qur’an.
Allah (swt) commands us to contemplate on the verses of the Qur’an and not to interpret it out of one’s own desire but based on thorough and complete knowledge because it is full of divine secrets. It is a book that was not revealed for a particular generation – it is for all generations until judgement day. Therefore its greatness and appeal must remain everlasting and its secrets and mysteries remain intact. The Qur’an is like the moon and the planets with clear orbits though deep inside. Thus was the heart of Amirul-Momineen (a.s.) a treasury of the Qur’an’s secrets, a stronghold of its understanding and forethought, conveying its contents to those who could grasp it and entrusted many of its secrets to his family - one by one.
Peace be upon you O Amirul-Momineen the day you were born and the day you struggled and advised for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, with patience desiring Allah’s promise until you were martyred. May Allah reward you, on behalf of Islam and the Messenger and the truthful, the best of rewards. I bear witness that you were the first in Islam and the most faithful in Iman and most certain than others, and most fearing Allah than others and most caring about the Messenger than others and most virtuous than others and highest in status than others and more noble than others and more generous towards him [the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.w.)] than others. You grew stronger when others weakened and followed the path of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.w.). You succeeded when others failed and your followed the light of Allah and those who followed you were enlightened. You were first to speak and greatest in dispute and most rational in logic and most appropriate in judgement and most courageous in heart and most certain than others and most superior in action and most knowledgeable in matters. You were a compassionate father for the believers if they came to you ......
Finally, we convey our deepest condolences to the Imam of our time Al-Hujjat ibn Al-Hassan, may Allah hasten his reappearance, on the martyrdom of his grandfather Amirul-Momineen (a.s.) and to our grand Maraji’as well as Muslims in general on this great tragedy and misfortune.
We are from Allah and unto Him is our return
