Liaison office of Grand Ayatullah Sayyid Ali Al Sistani (L.M.H.L) in London, Europe, North and South America.

The representative of the leading Marja’iya in Europe says in his meeting with Mubaligheen, Imams and officials of centres and establishments in the United Kingdom:
• Today Muslims in the West face the danger of assimilation and the danger of interpreting Islam in contravention of Shari’a texts of the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah.

This was in Manchester during his meeting with Imams, Mubaligheen and officials of centres in the UK under the title:

Current Challenges for Muslims in the Western World and Ways to Address Them

All Praise is due to Allah who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, and peace and blessings be upon the best of creations, our master, Muhammad and his guided household and whomsoever carries his message till the Day of Judgment.

We congratulate you on the birth of the [beacon] Imams of Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.)

Assalamu alaikum warahamtullahi wabarakatoh

Allah honoured Muslims by guiding them to the religion of Islam and sealed the [divine] messages with a complete and comprehensive religion and system for all affairs of life. Allah has honoured this nation by making it "..the best of nations brought forth for mankind.." full of goodness, implementing it in real life and steering humanity to success in this world and the Hereafter.

These days, however, some Muslims are burdened from carrying the call of Islam, neglecting its laws in their affairs so their state was lost, their unity ripped apart, and they were carved up into some fifty states. The enemies gathered upon them from everywhere and their country became coveted by the greedy and the aggressor. The Prophet (s.a.w.w.) foretold this by saying: "Nations will come to you almost like the eaters on their bowl of food.” Then, he (s.a.w.w.) was asked: “ O messenger of Allah is it because we are too few then ? “ He (s.a.w.w.) Said: “No, You will be many then, but because of your love for this world and your hatred for the afterlife.”

Therefore the colonialists invaded them with a corrupt Western culture which corrupted their religion, thought and deeds, and weakened their faith in the ideas, rulings and legislations of Islam.

And then they managed to impose their regimes and laws on the Muslim countries, and looted their wealth, impoverishing them and instigating wars and national, ethnic and sectarian conflicts. And it’s ongoing.

As a result, what we are seeing today is the dispersal of Muslims in the world – seeking sustenance and security - when their homeland was a home of peace for centuries and a refuge for all the oppressed. Muslims people began to flock to western countries as refugees, immigrants and runaways.

Thus, the Islamic nation has lived, for decades, in an alienation from Islam, governed by some despots; tormenting it to keep it away from its religion - for the benefit of their colonialist masters. They imposed policies of secularization and alienation to separate Islam from the life of the nation and the state and social affairs. As for Muslims today in the West, their alienation is twofold: alien to Islam and alien to life.

However, Allah Almighty has decreed benefit in this nation and in its religion.

After decades of fascination with the imported systems from the West & East, the Islamic Ummah has, thanks to Allah and the workers' effort, began to look forward to rising and uniting in order to establish the rule of Islam and to live an Islamic life under the provisions of Allah and in some cases the method of Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.).

Muslims in the West, like their Ummah, began to seek to return to their Islam, abiding by its rules, and establishing its rites in these lands.

Faced with this trend towards Islam, the enemies have increased their pressure on Muslims in their respective countries and in Muslim countries.

Muslims in the West generally face threats to their Islamic identity, and they face enormous challenges in adhering to their religion and defending their causes.

The dangers faced by Muslims are summarized in two major risks: The first being the danger of the gradual assimilation and integration into the corrupt aspectsالجوانب الفاسدة من حضارة الغرب) ) of Western civilization. Muslims in general, and the younger generation in particular, are exposed in these countries to inequitable official policies, which are based on harnessing educational institutions and laws to impose a Western way of life on Muslim sons and daughters.

The educational institutions teach Muslim students concepts and values of Western personal freedom and materialism – addressing them in accordance with the culture of moral decay and unruly instincts. On the other hand, the institutions of education practice a strict policy to restrict students' adherence to the provisions of Shari'a, especially the legal dress (khumar) and the performance of prayers.

In addition, laws after laws are passed to target the identity of Muslims, based on discrimination, hostility and persecution of Muslims in particular - such as laws of family reunification, the labour market, the forcible removal of children from the arms of their parents and many others.

Those who have studied these laws and observers of these policies, have no doubt that they are aimed at the destruction and fragmentation of the Muslim family, women and children. They warn of the emergence of a generation of Muslim people masquerading for Islam, and carrying a Western mentality and psyche, alien to their religion, their people and their Ummah.

The second danger being the attempts to interpret Islam in breach of the Shar'i texts in the Qur'an and Sunnah, by introducing the so-called “modern Islam” or “moderate Islam” which is acceptable to its very enemies. As for the Islam brought by Muhammad (s.a.w.w), from Almighty Allah, it is innocent of all these attempts.

Dear Brothers ..
Recently, a new project has started on the rehabilitation of the centers and institutions to teach them Islam and Western culture, which is a mischievous step - meant to divert Muslims from their religion and the understanding of its rulings and adhere to it as Allah Almighty has prescribed in His book and the Sunnah of His Prophet (s.a.w.w).

This project is based on the interpretation of the texts of the Shari’a in accordance with the concepts of the West and its civilization, values and systems, away from the meanings of the Arabic language, the language of the Qura’n and Sunnah, and away from the origins of interpretation and science of Hadith and the fundamentals of jurisprudence.

The dangers of this project is clear even to non-Muslims. According to one of the leading religious experts at the University of Odense, Tim Jensen, who on the 5th of August 2005 commented on this project, told the Danish newspaper (Information): "The reason for this study is the desire of politicians to achieve solubility and control, we want to tame them (i.e. Imams) so that they become like us and we want them to become “Protestant imams.” Ends.

Some newspapers in Denmark quoted the minister as "calling upon Muslims in Denmark to develop a new and modern version of Islam that conforms to the requirements of the West and denies the provisions of Islamic law."

So the message is clear: If Muslims are determined to cling to their religion, then they will have to carry a distorted form of Islam, a religion of individual spiritual priesthood, in accordance with Western standards of religion, the religion of the Church which allows everything imposed by secular and capitalist systems and statutes.

The challenges faced by Muslims in these countries are two main challenges:

The first being the campaigns of distortion against the Islamic faith and the rulings of Islam, culminating in the publication of the abusive cartoons of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.w) and the official political incitement preceding it- where the hateful cartoons of the Prophet of Allah (s.a.w.w) stigmatized him by "terrorism, extremism" and "oppression of women".

These campaigns of distortion on the political, media and educational levels have escalated in an effort to reduce the demand of many Muslims for their religion, and to reduce the increasing number of converts to Islam from Danish origins.

In this context, about two years ago, the Danish government imposed the teaching of Islam in the secondary stage of Religious Education classes to distort the Islamic faith and the provisions of Shari’a for Muslim and non-Muslim students.

While this challenge is used as a weapon of distortion and slander against Islam, it requires Muslims to address it with thought, argument and exposes its deception, so that people will not be confused about right being falsehood and so that Muslims will not lose faith and pride in their religion.

The second challenge is the attempt to sow discord among the Muslims according to the well known Western principle “divide and rule.” These political and media attempts classify Muslims according to Western tendencies. This is an "extremist" Muslim, a “moderate Muslim” and another “fundamentalist” and so on.

Although these attempts use methods of encouragement and intimidation, and are exposed to many, but they represent a serious challenge to exploit the weaknesses of Muslims, and the obvious impact in the fueling of differences, which requires a cohesive collective response of unity and efficient hard work.

Distinguished guests

To confront these dangers and challenges, it is imperative that all Muslims, individuals, groups and bodies, carry out their duties, as Allah commanded them to, and assume their full responsibilities before Allah and before these generations of Muslims. This requires us to do the following:

First: Efforts should be made to preserve the identity of the Muslims, doctrine and behaviour, which is not only concerned with worship and individual matters. Rather it requires a comprehensive Islamic culture, including a set of ideas of Islam and its provisions in various fields, social, economic and political, especially the doctrinal matters.

Muslims in these countries will then have the intellectual and psychological immunity against slipping into moral and behavioural decay, thus them from deviation and misguidance.

The preservation of Islamic identity requires efforts be made to educate Muslims about the concepts of Islam and the legal provisions that bind them in their lives, so that the commitment to Islam can be achieved with awareness and steadfastness, so that the Muslims can sort out their relations with each other and with non-Muslims without excess or negligence.

Work must be done to consolidate the belonging of Muslims to their Ummah, and raise awareness on their issues. For this, the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.w) said: "Such are the faithful in their harmony, sympathy and compassion, like a body, if a part complained then the rest of the body would feel the pain and rush aid it."

Therefore, it is not permissible to isolate Muslims in all parts of the West from their Ummah and its issues, or to isolate the Ummah from them and their issues, such that Muslims, in these countries, are treated as individuals without roots.

Or as a “minority” with no affiliation or civilization, who can easily be surrounded and deprived of their rights, isolated and subjugated, violating their sanctities and destroying its identity.

Muslims in these countries are an integral part of the Islamic nation, and they are strengthened by their Ummah, and their Ummah gains strength from them. We all witnessed the importance of Muslim action in the Muslim world during the issue of the offensive cartoons, which made many diplomats, businessmen and others call for the need to respect Muslims and their sanctities.

Secondly: To work hard to unite the ranks of the Muslims and their efforts - through consultation and cooperation in the service of Islam, and defend the issues of Muslims and their rights, in compliance with the command of Allah ((You help one another in righteousness and piety, but do not help one another in sin and rancour)).

Here we should point to an important issue which is the difference in matters pertaining to the branches of religion, according to the rules of ijtihad, is a legitimate difference, because it is based on the texts of the Qur'an and Sunnah. It is a difference that cannot lead to division and conflict between Muslims and spoil the amity.

Uniting on Islam, which is a right, is a force for Muslims, whilst conflict and blameworthy disagreement is weakness – tempting us by the enemies. , and the truth is said by Allah Almighty:
((And obey Allah and His Messenger; and fall into no disputes, lest ye lose heart and your powers depart)).

What Muslims are facing from repeated attacks on their religion, their prophet and their Qur’an, and the dangers surrounding them must unite them. They must unite on their fateful issues, in thought, position and action, and be united like a solid structure, as described by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his household) in the Hadith: “Believers are like a single structure binding one another together.”
"The Muslim is the brother of the Muslim he does not do injustice to him nor degrade him."

Thirdly: To stand together to confront attempts to distort and invent a new Islam by creating awareness among Muslims about an important fact, namely; that Islam is what is revealed in the Qur'an and Sunnah. The Almighty says: (( I but follow what is revealed to me from my Lord..)).

We have to adhere to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.w.) and his direction and the conduct of the Imams from his pure household who are the truth from the Qur'an for his saying (s.a.w.w.): "I recommend you to the Book of Allah and my family, if you hold on to them, after me, you will never get lost.”

It is also necessary to emphasize another Qura’nic fact that Allah has completed this religion with the mandate of Ali ibn Abi-Talib and the immaculate Imams (a.s.), for He the Blessed and Exalted said: ((This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion...)). Allah (s.w.t.) also said: ((We have revealed to you the book as an explanation of everything)).

Just as Islam introduced the provisions of acts of worship and ethics, it has also introduced the provisions of transactions from congregation, economy and governance and included in its legislation the relations of individuals, state affairs and society.

Fourthly: Facing the campaigns of distortion and slander that affect Islam and its people, by elevating the Muslims, their awareness and behaviour, to respond to their religion and their Ummah on the allegations of terrorism and extremism, adhering to what Allah called them ((...It is He Who has named you Muslims...))

And to be able to carry the Islamic call to non-Muslims with wisdom, i.e. argument and proof, and the debate of gentle persuasion, with pure Islamic thinking and with the spirit of the believer who is proud of his religion, in compliance with the command of Allah Almighty: ((Who is better in speech than one who calls (men) to Allah, works righteousness, and says, "I am of those who bow in Islam"?)).

At the end of my talk I stress upon my brothers, Ullemas and Mubaligheen, that our responsibility today is great and dangerous. We must convey the correct thought from its pure sources (Muhammad and his pure and chaste progeny – peace and blessings be upon them) to all the believers in the world - especially young people whose thoughts and beliefs are being manipulated by deviant currents - such that some have reached a degree of atheism and denial of the existence of Allah Almighty as well as the principle of Nubowwa and Imamah. Some are beginning to dispute the invariable matters of the Aqeeda and its terminology, especially after the elimination of the terrorist and Takfiri orientation with the fatwa of the leading Marja’iya and the sacrifices of the righteous martyrs.

This led to the emergence of an anti-Islamist movement whose mission and purpose is to make people doubt their faith, religion, values and scholars. This is done through presenting dubious issues through means of communication, websites, and some wage-earners who are dressed in the cloak of religion and others.

Therefore my dears, our duty today is to correct the deviant ones and to bring them back to the right path. Otherwise, our reckoning on the Day of Resurrection will be difficult, on the day we stand between the hands of The All Wise All Just. ((But stop them, for they must be asked)).

The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.w.) said: "If heresy appears in my Ummah, let the Alim show his knowledge. If he does not, he will be deprived from the light of Iman."

O Allah, make us from ((Those who listen to the Word, and follow the best (meaning) in it: those are the ones whom Allah has guided, and those are the ones endued with understanding.)).

In conclusion, we ask Allah Almighty to return the enmity of the enemies of Islam back upon them, and to unify the word of the Muslims and unite them in a dignified state, in which Islam and its people will be exalted and kufr and its people will be humiliated and to make us advocates of obedience and leaders to His path and bless us with dignity in this world and the hereafter – and this is not difficult for Allah. ((Allah will not fail His Promise))
